Any ideas are welcome.

The outer sleeve is spring loaded and the centre area is dished and pock marked from being hit with something like a punch.
Jewellers Tool?
Leatherwork?
Cheers,
Martin

Is it a grinder of some sort
err not sure if I have done this right but I have sent a PM to woodbloke I think!

It seems that the narrow end is for hitting with hammer but no evidence of any such hitting.
The pin you can see runs across the top of a strong spring inside allowing the outer collar to move about a 1/4" in total.
Re sail grommets, I would have thought the dents etc would be larger if fo that purpose.
Keep at it guys!
Martin

Hi,

Can we see the little end please.

I recon the dents are abuse.

Hi Pete,
Have no camera at the minute.
Little end is about 1 1/4" diameter with large heavy steel ferrule but looks like new, never had a hammer near it.

G1, if thats how you do your cooking I'll bring sandwiches!

Martin

The spring loading must be to push something out or to release it?
Cannot imagine it will be to reduce impacts? But no signs of bashing on the thin end ferrule - Intriguing?

Promises, Promises  I`ll be waiting....

A spring to reduce the impact, or rather temper the final impact, would prevent the edge of the rivet cutting the material. (Think thick old sail cloth).

Laird,
but why the spring loading? :?
Martin

Positioning components?? prior to being driven flush or allowing location on end of a type of dowel/peg whilst being driven in stopping it peening out??

Indents look to be incorrect usage of tool

This is a daft suggestion, but could it be for hitting in the last blow on a nail to stop the wood being damaged? Maybe the top is not damaged because it has been hit with a wooden mallet?

Like I said, daft suggestion.

Hmmm. It reminds me of those devices that home wine makers used to use for putting corks into bottles. However, the size is wrong for a wine bottle. But perhaps it was used for capping small jars?

I know! It's a fish paste jar lid fixer!

I guess most members of this forum are too young to remember fish paste sandwiches for tea......

Waddya mean, too young   I can remember being dragged around the Shipphams Paste factory as a young lad when we were on a week's holiday in Worthing and it rained every day. Can't say I found it very interesting........ :(

Cheers
