I had the third one when I was six, had to eat the beans first though, that developed a further skill for me. :-"

Take care.

One of the words that seem to be lost between a parent and a child these days is the word 'no'?

I think that it is so sad that a child has to have what they want? So many parents are governed by this and are going into debt because of it.

I am glad that I grew up with 'no' ringing in my ears at times. Perhapse it taught me a few things?

I'm 47 and never had any of the phones shown and still refuse to carry a mobile (or correctly; portable telephone). The wife is very frustrated that I'm not accessible on the end of a phone 24/7, she says "but how can I talk to you when you're out?", to which I have to reply "but that's the point in being out!".

Why??? Why the hell should a 5 year old need or even want a phone? Am I in a different world here?

I have a mobile phone, it's portable too, and it's used for emergencies or if I am going to be longer than expected if I am out. Not to speak to the poor sod I am standing next to!!!!!

I would love to live in a Faradys cage and I think that every restaurant should have one so that mobiles CAN'T be disturbig everyone (hammer) (hammer) (hammer) (hammer)

My five year old has just been asking when she can have a phone, I just find it very sad.
Peter
Why?

Because she is Five

=D> =D> =D> totally agree.....

however..... me & my 'bruv had an 'intertelecommunication' toy when we were younger.... yeah, 2 toy phones that worked on a long length of cable and operated by batteries. They worked.... i think.... it was difficult to tell.... as all you could hear was his voice in the other room... :D :D :D

Plus..... i'll have to see if i can grab a pic or 2 (on my portable telecommunication device) of all the peeps in the canteen at lunchtime playing with their toys.... all sat at the same table, but nobody saying a word... all just furiously tapping away finding out if they've been 'liked' today..... what a strange world we now live in :|

And I'm sure she does all the things that five-year-olds do - playing with dolls, making pasta necklaces, chatting with friends? I wondered why you found it sad that she'd want to chat with her friends...

Most people don't use smartphones for chatting with their friends, I'm sure that the attraction for a 5 year old is the games you can play on them, and the photos you can take. The later she gets addicted the better......

I am also fed up of being in social situations with people who have their phone in sight on the table and are constantly glancing at it to see whether anyone has sent them a text or a twitter instead of concentrating on the conversation. And the phones are constantly cheeping and chirping and ringing and playing tunes....

I don't carry one either. I have a lifelong hatred of telephones. And these new ones are designed to take over our lives little by little and imperceptibly.

Never had a mobile phone and im not plaining in buying one. the mrs as one but there not for me. she would be ringing me every 5mins to see where i am. #-o

I don't think I could ever be without my smartphone now. Top 5 things I use it for.

1-Phone calls and messages

2-Camera- its probably as good as a medium priced compact so anything I find interesting usually gets snapped.

3-Price checking when out and about.

4-Streaming music through my car stereo, no need for loads of c.ds anymore.

5- browsing forum's when I have time to spare - not when I've arranged to see someone ;)

I can't see any reason why a 5 year old would need a mobile phone. There's plenty of other ways they can communicate with each other.

She probably wants one because most of her friends have one, my two did not get one until they started secondary school. Computers are another bugbear , my 13 year old lad would be on his computer playing or watching games being played on you tube 24 / 7 if we let him, Its as if he is addicted to it. We live in the middle of 25 acres of woodland you would think he would be out playing in it like i would have been at his age, but no ! I have built Tarzan swings, climbing stuff etc but he and my daughter have not been in it in the last 4 months. We brought him a motocross bike of ebay to get him outside, he gets it out on rare occasions rides it around the woods for 20 minutes then goes back in doors, its going back on ebay as it spends to much time clogging up a corner of the workshop. I really despair !
