I had my first visit to the Timber Mill today since it moved from its original location in Mottisfont in West Hampshire to Arlesford east of Winchester.

The first thing that was missing was MUD. I got so used to taking wellies no matter what the time of year and it was good not to need them.

John has got his workshop all set up and is making beautiful rustic furniture for both indoors and out but that is not of so much interest to us as the raw timber.

Nearly all the stock of oak, ash yew etc is there. I did not see much spalted stuff but I fully expect it to be there tucked away.
I wanted re-sawn oak for a project and John's policy is to let customers rummage to find what they want and he will further re-saw anything you want.
The oak is fantastic value at £15 per cube!

At the moment John is there on his own so it is well worth phoning before travelling to make sure he will be there.

Full details of the location and contact info are on the website

Sounds interesting Bob.

Is that on the small industrial estate next to the recycling centre/tip where JWT Crafts (Les Thorne's folks) turning place used to be ?

Used to enjoy the run out to Arlesford on a Saturday morning to mooch around the place, pick up some timber and watch the odd turning demo before they retired and closed the place a few years back.

Lovely journey through some beautiful countryside, couldn't help but feel chilled and relaxed by the time I got there :D

Cheers, Paul :D

Hi Paul,

According to the interweb, you are correct in that the recycling centre is in the same road. I did not spot it when I was there today however. My excuse is that not only was I looking for the Timbermill but also try to stay out of the way of a juggernaut performing a multipoint u turn!

I'm not a regular visitor to Arlesford as the bypass takes most folk flying by but after todays visit I expect I'll be there more regularly.

John has new stock lined up to arrive this winter but still worth popping in now if you are passing.

Cheers

Bob

I think most of the beech he has is sort of half splalted, it's got quite a few funky colours in it but is still pretty hard. At least I hope he's still got some, I need to for my competition piece

Aidan,
I'm sure there will be some spalted beech for you. I was not looking for anything spalted or beech.

I suggest you ring John and ask. When I was going round he was indicating various pieces that were 'spoken for'.

He did say that he was going away for a few days soon, so bear that in mind.
