A dog is one of the most important things to have in a workshop...

They do the cleaning and lubricating:

...and all that sort of stuff but you have to go through the various machine parts three or for times before they get the point...

Interruptions from other team members are discouraged..usually quite simply with a look...

....and you should always ensure they can see and learn by watching what you do....

Their use as guard dogs cannot be overestimated....

...particularly when cleaning outside.

An apprentice dog is always keen to learn...

...but care should be taken at puppy stage in getting him to understand the difference between "scrap" and "vital bits of wood which took ages to make"!!

Care should be taken when training on machine tools though...

This does take a little bit longer so make sure they get to have a go themselves.

You can eventually move on to other more complex training tasks...such as holding ladders...

...and other advanced techniques.

Green wood training is vital in wood preparation...

....but this technique does tend to take advantage of only a small selection of breeds...the ones who destroy couches when young are the best...mobile phones...remote controls...shoes...kitchen floors...that sort of breed!

But most of all...he/she will be your best friend...and someone to show your work to when nobody else takes a remote bit of interest!

Have fun!

Jimi....AND ALFIE!

That's brightened up my day ! ;) looks like some good teamwork- especially the green woodworking pic

That made me chuckle which was nice because im experiencing one of those days in the workshop. My little parsons russel goes every where with me and gets upset when he cant go for a drive. He even follows me up the ladders into the loft.

I've got fox cubs (6) in my wood store, so far all they have achieved is to play with the brush head that was lying about, leave a surprising amount of bread in return, and a strong smell, but one did sniff my foot before it rushed off. My lakeland Terrier is completely disinterested!

Alfie deserves a treat for sharing the workshop with you, perhaps you could treat him to his own nail gun

Thanks Jim made me smile. I'm very envious of your faithful companion, sadly my spaniel has very little interest in wood but have a new arrival that is showing a keen interest. Health & safety training is proving difficult, tried to lick a bee this morning

However I think dressing 'em up in combat cowboy trousers / chaps is crossing a line.

Yes Toby...that flooring job which should have been a couple of hours took me two days!!!

He kept standing on the bit I wanted to lay a tile on!!!

They think he was thrown out of a car as a puppy...dislocated his hip which is still wonky but he copes!

He then roamed the streets of Gravesend for a while and I think he must have found a kebab shop because he absolutely loves junk food and lettuce!!

The night I got him he wouldn't let go of me for nearly two days before he stopped shaking....

I tell you this...he has paid me back already a million times over for taking him home...

Just coming home to ALFIE is like Christmas every day!

Jimi (oh..and ALFIE!)

ALFIE says THANKS for all the comments...I had to read them to him...he's not THAT smart!

But he DOES enjoy the pictures!

Cheers guys

Jimi and ALFIE!

wow, I am loving these pics! Very similar "look" to our dog but he doesnt get anywhere near the workshop and if he did he'd be laid on a rug all day...
