Went to the sales yesterday morning (8am). I felt sorry for the retail trade and though I am not desperate I thought I would buy three twill check shirts from M & S. They were still £25 each, no reduced sale price yet signs everywhere saying upto 50% off.
So I didn't buy them and I wont bother going to M & S again for a couple of years at least to have my own back, I hope they go bust.

Decided we could do with changing the freezer so did the big 2 elec. retailers, sod em, one was giving the 2% vat reduction and both only had two models to choose from and they didn't compare for the existing freezer we already own.

So all this sales hype is really only a big con.
The goods on sale are special purchases with a silly price mark up only for show.

Rant over.

Totally agree with you.

Swmbo ear marked two pairs of fashion jeans from Fat Face, she went online within ten minutes of the so called sale and everything was sold out  She had the exact same thing with shoes on the M&S web site.

Worst of all Argos have been advertising a 30% reduction on Dyson vacuum cleaners yes they may have reduced them by 30% but the starting price is much higher than most online sellers anyway, we found the same cleaner £30 cheaper elsewhere. :?

Do you really hope a company goes bust and thousands of jobs are lost because you couldn't get a couple of cheap shirts?

You're full of Christmas spirit aren't you!

DW - we were in the M&S Hedge End store at Southampton and stuff was clearly labelled ...selected lines only so I think you need to be a little bit fairer, it's not a blanket 50% reduction on everything  - Rob

I think the BBC and others are as much to blame, they have been blasting out sales 70 ; 90% off and I thought they were genuine because of the economic situation.
At this rate I perhaps wont even believe there is a recession coming, its all hype.

I had to get to M & S to learn it was only selected items and some of those goods werent perhaps in the store earlier so it is still a con.

Hope they go bust.

I agree with Nibbs,
I was looking for a coffee machine. In Argos it was £49.99 in Debenhams it was £39.99 for the same machine.
You really do have to look around.
Thank goodness for the Internet.

Well, if it wasn't for devonwoody going commando, he could have got some good deals on M&S pants

You brought a smile to my face with that one Roger. :) :) :)

The twill shirts are £25 each, so x 3 = £75.

I can go down the local cash and carry and purchase 25 shirts at £3 each, I dont think I could live long enough to wear that lot out.

So at £25 each (made in ~+=_~~) they are very expensive.
hope they go bust.

I wouldn't ever go anywhere near the January sales. EVER! I was glad enough this year not to have to go near a shopping place to buy presents this year. Who cares what discounts they have on? All I want it tools. TOOLS I TELL YOU!

I think you may have over done the meds Tom, best find a dark room and lay down for a bit, before going near anything with a sharp edge on it.

Anyway I'm not a cheapskate, I purchased 7 Rolex watches for my grandchildren last Christmas.

Anyone beat that. :)

Were they Knock off`s??We just give the kids all money, they can decide how best to spend it...all are over 18 years old.Oh and a meal and games to play, you know a party.

I can tell you that the price of seven started at over £20K for the lot, but the unfortunate gentleman who I think was suffering from jaundice and irregular eye deformaties from birth after half an hour of intense bargaining reduced the price to £25 the lot as the airport bus at the Shangai hotel was leaving for the airport and he did not have anymore disposable negotiating time.

Anyway the watches are all made in the the same factory for around $1 each and nobody can tell the difference.

Probably all made in Chiwan and bought off Del boy on the market...I for one hope M&S survive the coming year as I've bought almost all my stuff in there since about 1968 - Rob

There seems to be a bit of a misconception about what sales are.

Basically they are an opportunity for a retailer to sell off redundant stock at a discount at the end of the season, freeing up space and cash for new lines.

Few retailers discount their top selling lines in the sale unless it is for marketing or PR purposes.

As for discounts across the board of 70-80%; any retailer offering these is quite obviously going bust - and soon!

Dan

unless of course they bought all their stock on credit and are now desperate to pay it back - that tends to be a reason for big discounts across the board.

devon - i thing the give away phrase in the M&S sale was upto 50% off ie most are less reduced and some are not reduced at all.

bsn, you are perfectly correct. (sorry about the initials but didnt want to be offensive :) )

I have spent sometime self employed connected to the textile industry and I can definately state that most Sales bumf at this time of the year shouldnt be called sales.
The bulk of the stock is purposely ordered in for this period, and any genuine big reductions are usually bad selling lines or other problem items.
My understanding of M & S from my days was that they didnt have seconds or sales. Only British goods.
Now you see labels made in Indonesia , Brazil, most probably not China because they would be highly priced compared to other sources.
Remember they have discontinued buying from many British mfrs. so they dont get much sympathy from me.
