In November 2013 I bought a new Hotpoint larder fridge. Over the last couple of days the temperature in the top of the fridge has hovered between 6 and 10 degrees C so not cold enough for the purpose of a fridge. I rang the retailer and explained the problem and they said it needs the Hotpoint engineer which either they could arrange or I could ring direct. I opted for the latter which was a mistake! You go through to an Indesit call centre and it took me 10 minutes before I actually spoke to somebody but I was continually assured "my call was important".

When I explained the problem the guy asked me if I had an extended warranty. No said I and the fridge is less than two months old so I want it repaired or replaced and extended warranty doesn't come into it. He tried and tried to sell me this extended warranty until in the end I asked him if I had rung an insurance company by mistake as he didn't seem interested in the fault. I also said this was the last Indesit product I would buy based on this experience

The engineer comes tomorrow and if he tries to sell me an extended warranty...................

Have a look at the Sale of Goods Act.

All sold goods have to last a reasonable time and be fit for purpose. The retailer is responsible for repair/replace or refunded not as it should be.

You have a 6 year warranty with the retailer despite what they say.

Although after 6 months you have to prove it was a manufacturer fault.

Ben,
you are quite correct in most of what you say with one important exception, that is, the onus is upon the retailer / manufacturer to prove it isn't a manufacturing / material defect.

Cheers

I was quite tired when I wrote that and just intended to give a highlight of what the SOGA dealt with.

Hopefully it will be of use to T.E.B

Assume it was more than £100, and if you bought it via credit card you have another safety net with the card provider.

Thanks for the info folks. The engineer called today and the fridge needs re-gassing. Not a word about extended warranties (hammer)

That implies that the gas has leaked out. If the fridge is regassed it may be OK, but if there is a leak the problem will keep recurring! Get him to check for leaks and ensure that the retailer is told that if there is a leak you will want a replacement fridge - not a repair.

Hotpoint engineer came yesterday and regassed the fridge. It took him an hour with some fancy equipment. Went off saying 'I hope that works!".

It didn't  . Rang the retailer today and said if I died from food-poisoning I'd come back and haunt them. They are bringing a new fridge on Thursday. Hotpoint wanted to send an engineer out again #-o .

Regards Keith

So he was pretty confident then? Sounds like he's used to it. Hotpoint though so say no more.

I will never buy hotpoint stuff ever again its absolute rubbish. We've gone through 3 washers 2 dryers and a fridge freezer. One machine broke after only one week then the moron of an engineer walked up our newly laid stair carpet in muddy boots.

I stick to neff or Bosch now
