tarnishing on oak...help please?

Hi,

I don't know if htis is hte right place to put this....

I'm trying to finish these cones as part of a proejct but I am not happy with tarnishing on the surface......

The wood is oak (I hope!), it have noticed that pieces cut off fairly recently don't seeem to show this so much....is it a reaction with the wood to air over a couple of days?

It doesn't sand off easily!

How do I get rid of it.....can anyone help , please?

If you are referring to the dark patches forming on the surface I suspect they are due to moisture either in the wood or local surroundings (even handling) reacting with iron or other contamination, there may even be something in the wood that's oxidizing when exposed to moist air.

If it is a stain caused by contact with iron (like a clamp or steel wool), it can be removed with dilute oxalic acid.
