Tangent to a Circle?

Thanks for the replies.

I raised the question because I was a bit shocked when a 15 year old student I had said he didn't know what a tangent was. I seem to recall doing basic geometry between the ages of 12 to 14 and assumed it was still taught upto GCSE level. Maybe not :?:

I've just asked a maths teacher friend and he said around 14/15 in both England and Scotland, although it depends on ability.
