As for getting the wedge out, is a 'Striking Knob' out of the question?

XYM,
I'm glad you like it!

What is a striking knob...........apart from the obvious Benny Hill-type answer?

Philly's got competition

He may well have..........

......but not from me.

What is a striking knob

It's an inserted piece of hardwood that sits proud of the surface and is designed to take the blow from the adjusting mallet Mike.
Prevents bruising of the plane/scraper body.

Roy.

Mike - I think if you plotted a graph showing plane ownership over number of years wordworking then you would see that your slope looks like it's heading towards an exponential curve :D

Well, IB, on the face of it you have a point.........but gaining 2 planes in 3 years is hardly obsessive, particularly as that is it now..........done.........collecting over! It isn't really Waka-esque is it?

Mike

Mike - I knew it was a plane when I saw the shot, but didn't expect that. It looks great. Absolutely green.!.!.

Cheers mate ( be in touch soon, sorry, re WS )

Neil (who has been telling the bricky about 'my architect'!!!)

Yebut Mike, Waka and the other collector of note (wot lives beyond the Tamar at the ends of the earth) were in your position once as well  - Rob

........firstly, whatever goes on the other side of the Tamar is beyond all human reason

:D :D :D (I lived in Devon as a youth)

..........secondly, they were obviously not quite as sure as I am that minimalism in the tool department is a virtue. I think I offered a £100 bet on this in another thread.

Final installment......

I made a walnut & sycamore wedge:

I might have to add a striking knob.........but, not now, I've some oak to play with.

Mike

Thanks Steve.......

Back one page 1 of this thread is a photo of the sole. Let me know if that isn't close enough in and I'll post another one or two.

Ah, right. I was wondering how far down the wedge comes?
S

About 6mm above the base, Steve, I reckon.......

It's a bit "warts & all" at that size, isn't it?

Thanks Neil!! :D

Mike, one question are you not worried about the wear rate of the spalted sycamore? Particularly if scraping material like oak

Well, if this was to be used as a plane, then I would be. I see it as just being used for the final finish, prior to oiling or whatever. It should be used on surfaces that have already been sanded or planed......very much as I use my cabinet scraper at the moment. It isn't very spalted like my blanket box, so it should really be too bad........but ask me in 10 years!
