Last night I paid my first ever visit to the Sutton Coldfield Marquetry Group which meets on the second Wednesday of each month. Apart from me, there were only two others, both rather elderly gentlemen. John was the group chairman and Colin was a regular member. I knew it was a small group, but even so! Apparently they normally have about six to eight members but a number of members were on holiday.
We didn't cut any marquetry but looked at examples of each others' work. They are talented and seemed to be impressed with my work too. Then we talked about marquetry, both knife cut and fretsawn for a couple of hours. I enjoyed myself and think I will visit them again, although they are not terribly local to me. Travelling up the M42 wasn't too much of a problem, but the journey back was complicated by unnecessary lane closures and speed restrictions.
If anyone in the Sutton Coldfield area is interested in learning about marquetry, this would be a good group to contact. They have a lot of veneers and other equipment put aside especially for beginners to practise on. Membership is cheap at £5 per annum and £1 per meeting - and there's always a cuppa.
I have contact details for anyone who is interested.
