The Axminster adapter looks really clunky, can't believe it adds about 2" overhang or did I read that wrong ?

The adapter I added to my vicmarc chuck to convert to M33 x 3.5 barely adds a half inch overhang from memory and without going out to the workshop to check !

Think it's to do with relevant thread sizes and if you can get away with one inside another like an insert.

I would agree with some of the other comments and get a dedicated thread Supernova. Exserts never run as true as a chuck on it's own and the additional distance from the headstock means you are putting more leverage/stress on the bearings, especially if you are not using a tailstock. I suspect you are like me, a large part of my chucking investment is in the jaws and accessories, some of which are home made, not just the chuck body.
Are you absolutely certain your chuck is a dedicated thread model. If not, you could look at lathes that have headstock spindle sizes that can be adapted with an insert. I use a Nova DVR with 1.25" x 8tpi and that is good and solid, and not that much smaller than the M33 x 3, but is available as an insert. To be honest I don't see why some of the latest lathes are using that size thread as I think it's totally unnecessary.
If you do have to change chuck, it might be worth calling Record Power, as they may have a chuck body on its own they could sell to you.

The insert you have is I91S INSERT 9. You will have to try very hard to buy a lathe that does not have one of the other inserts on the list. RP are the distributors. Bob's your Auntie.

I had the same dilemma when I upgraded from my old 3/4" x 16 lathe to the APTC 1628vs with an M33 x 3.5 threads & bought a Jet adaptor from The Toolpost & Didcot.
The adaptor has a total length of 68mm with the 3/4" section being 19mm long. The overhang will be a little more (about 4mm) because I didn't measure the thickness of the metal inside the adaptor.
I use my APTC Woodturners chuck fitted with O'Donnell jaws on the adaptor with no run out when tested with a dial gauge. That's better than my old lathe with the chuck mounted normally.
Just a bit of info but not sure if it helps with your decision.

I use an exert of 1.5inch by 6tpi on a union graduate with an original supernova. I have found the extra extension really useful as it gives more access at the headstock side. I have also turned some massive pieces of wood, approximately 3foot diameter, and 10inch thick with no problems, bearings are still fine. The only problem though is that it does add 2 extra screw threads, which does introduce chance of chuck not running true.
If precision is really important get one companion chuck that is direct threaded.
