Sun Child saws...help! EDIT: SORTED

David Barron talks of a Sun Child Japanese saw made by Niagotchu ??? Is this the same one or is 'Sun Child' a name used by several?

EDIT: Dozuki Nokogiri are both Japanese names with a reference to a saw, so not a manufacturer as I thought. The Sun Child in the link must be the same as the one DB describes I reckon.

I've just found a blog by David Charlesworth from 2006 when searching and he mentions the Sun Child sold by Thanet Tools. Sorted.

They are made by Gyokucho - I bought one a few years ago and they are excellent.

Just received and tried my new Sun Child. Wow! 5 Strokes of the saw to cut the same depth that my reasonably sharp dovetail saw takes 14 or so to do and with a much finer and cleaner cut. I know a new broom cuts fastest n all that but initial observations are impressive. Workshops in turmoil at the minute but will be using it asap on some new drawers for the wife.

Actually, I find the retail habits of several tool suppliers to be fantastically irritating.

Rutlands may sell the same saw but it is not possible to identify theirs easily as they do not quote the Gyokucho numbers.

The Sunchild used to have it's name engraved on the blade but no longer does, so one has to do with the number which is S-311.

Matthew's saw is slightly different, as is Dictum's. David Barron's current saw is S-370, (a deeper blade).

I have always dealt with Thanet tools and am delighted that these saws have survived their withdrawal from the Japanese hand tool business. The price is very reasonable.

Why is it too difficult for someone to publish the Gyokucho numbers and specifications, and for retailers to supply those numbers ?????

A superb saw David....so tempted to use it for other things than dovetails. The 370 that David Barron promotes is apparently the same saw, slightly deeper but with tougher steel he says. I searched far and wide but couldn't come up with a 370 other than David's. Being my first foray into Japanese tools I didn't want to spend too much. How long have you used a Sun Child for before it's noticeably tired?

Why are we getting crosscut saws for dovetailing? Nokigiri make a rip especially for dovetail cutting. Is the crosscut better, or just cause it will do shoulders too. If one were to have a rip and cross, would that be better? I use a rip dozuki myself, have done for years, but never tried Sunchild. When mine packs up cutting well, I'd like an alternative as I got mine when I was in America. It is flippin' miraculous.BTW.

I'm tempted, not by the Sun Child but by a much larger Ryoba. I think I have enough dovetailey type western saws. Last time I had a Japanese saw (20 years ago) I was mighty impressed. I bought mine from Tilgear but I think I was buying a replacement blade every year. Maybe it wasn't as good as the Gyokucho saws.
