Thanks for that, Bob. This is what SWMBO has been using. Apologies as we're going OT a bit.

It will be fine for what you want Roger.

I do just wonder if the decline in bees, etc could be traced to weedkillers. I wonder if any one is looking at that.

Rob

The use of vicious pesticides and weedkillers have I think declined over the years so the bee query is questionable. Opinions differ. :?

My next door neighbour is a beekeeper and drives me nuts 'cause the little buggers always swarm into my trees - not his and though I like them, thousands buzzing around is disconcerting especially if you're under the tree cutting the grass when you find out - they ain't keen on grasscutters :!:

His theory is that the decline is down to:-

1). Cold and damp weather conditions (unpredictable patterns)
2). loss of feeding habitat. Wildflowers ste. (so weedkillers could affect)
3). A mite which carries disease and is now present in almost all hives and which kills off colonies if not caught and properly treated.
He also says that despite all the media coverage and attempts to attract new beekeepers, there are many fewer than of old and no sign of that changing.

regards

Bob

ps
if you find yourself anywhere near a swarm, they don't like sudden movement or dark colours, (so if you're wearing black and run away - you're stuffed  )

Dark colours is what bears wear!

I have a bosch cordless strimmer which runs for about 10-15 mins before it runs out of puff - which is more than enough for me before I get bored and my arms ache.

One note is I would look for one with a charger that automatically stops when the battery is full - which most if not all of the cheap ones don't have and then you knacker the battery.

and the bosch one has a disc on which one of those whippy bladey things hooks on as opposed to a line - but you can drill a little hole in the disc and tie on some of that line if you wish.

hope that helps

Never got close enough to a bear to see how thick it's skin or fur is - bloody site thicker than mine I expect though

Info came from my mate the beekeeper. Come to think of it though he also told me they wouldn't be aggressive but the little b****** chased me 50 yards. - Didn't realise they could fly so fast

Bees are known to take the occasional sheep - but a whole sheep will last a bee colony a good long while, so you'll only lose a few. Bees can't lift an adult horse or cow - but you might want to use a bee scarer when there are foals or calfs around.

As a bee keeper I do need to tell you that this is a load of b*********s. :sign3:

Rob

quite so - everyone knows bees are capable of carrying off an adult horse, they just have to be in big enough swarms

Cue Monty Python

My wife has the Ryobi Adapt-all thingy thing that has all the attachments...the strimming bit...the hedge trimmer etc....and it is brilliant! She loves doing the garden...like Terminator with that thing!

If the battery model is anything like it...this would be ideal and as I have the Ryobi circular saw I can confirm that that thing rocks so the power should be adequate for your wife's use. I cut oak doors two inches thick with the Ryobi saw and only had to change the battery once!

Getting back to sanity :D What is the likelihood of an animal kept near a hive being badly stung?

minimal so long as they arent able to actually rub against the hive and agravate the bees

if you must put hives in a feild with livestock you need to fence round them - not only to prtotect the vlivestock from being stung, but to protect the bees from having their hive knocked over
