Sorry I've forgotten to look whether the sides are ply or not. In any case, for what it's worth, pre drill the hole so that the core of the screw puts no expansive force on the drawer sides. Then before fitting the screws clamp the sides so that they cannot split when the screws are used. Try it first on scrap of course. I apologise if all this is old hat to you :). BTW if you add a drop of PVA to the hole before fitting the screws any splitting will be reinforced with glue as it happens.

You could rebate the outside face of the sides, to produce a small tongue on the bottom edge of the sides, which drops into a narrow groove on the top face of the ply base. This would increase the glue area, create a small amount of mechanical joint, and reduce the risk of slippage.

That sounds quite neat. The base is ply - would this work still?

Should do. Depends on how thick the ply is. I'd probably use 6mm ply (depending on what you can buy), with a 2-3mm deep groove. It doesn't have to be much. Just enough to increase the glue bond and make it a bit neater. Only issue now is that you'll see the edge of the ply. Can't think of a solution to that what with all your challenges!

Cheers.

No, I actually WANT to see the ply ends - it's a piece that I want to be illustrative of its construction methods hence the coupling of walnut and oak (and ply).
