I've been fettling a couple of Stanleys - I guess they are around 20 years old.

Stan 80- this looks a good tool with a large flat face, and comfortable to hold. But I just can't get it to go! it keeps clogging.

Stan 151 - this works fine for me, not as good as my several "nonedescript" wood ones, but not a bad tool.

Whats with the 80 ?? is it me or what?

Ah, well, you see the #80 isn't in fact a spokeshave - it's a scraper. Sharpening same and getting it cutting nicely is a whole different ball game that puzzles many an owner at first. Here's a Google search of the forum to get you started on some of the excellent advice already in the archive.

Cheers, Alf

Ahhh! The light come on

Thanks Alf.

Funny - whilst stopping myself hurling it across the shop, I was thinking "this wouldn't make a bad scraper" :p

So......... The blade should not have a honed ( like a plane blade) edge ?
It came with an edge and I assumed it was a spokeshave. And gave it the Scary sharp treatment

Will study the links Alf. I am wondering if I put the blade in upside down now, will check when I get home.

Quite pleased to find out I have a scraper (smug look on face) even though embarrassed I'd tried to make (silly person that I am) a spokeshave out of it
