Spray Glue (Contact Adhesive)

Has anyone experienced delamination problems with spray glues "contact adhesive" in the last 18 months?

I would be interested in hearing about your problem, there is talk out there that a major glue manufacturer has a manufacturing fault with their adhesive which is causing the glue to fail months after application has taken place?

In my experience, this is a problem with contact adhesives in general. I used a lot of contact adhesives (Evo Stik; Dunlop Thixofix; etc) back in the 1970s when Formica was all the rage and I found that in many cases the adhesive bond would eventually fail. Nowadays I would never use contact adhesive if I wanted a permanent bond. How long the bond will last is variable, depending on the materials and the conditions but I would always expect the bond to fail eventually. Best to look upon it as a temporary rather than a permanent adhesive.

yes it was a batch made by bostik ltd caused a lot of problems and was produced in september 2011 I think they found Iron Oxide within the glue.

But it was only found in a batch of 100 from the 3000 they produced that month

HI, you obviously know a lot about this problem?

Yes the glue was from Bostik and bottled by a company called AFT, we are told there was a batch of 900 and dates back to August 2011

We have a copy of a letter from Bostik acknowledging that their glue had a problem.

We are told there are claims amounting up to £8m and their insurers are trying to cloud the issue and not pay.

It is all being kept hush hush, we are trying to identify names of companies that have been affected as it seems we are all fighting this on our own. We need to unite our efforts before we all go broke making good defective work.

THAT'S OK, I was a bit worried there for a moment as I had done HPL last year, and your post rang a warning bell. lucky moi, nowt wrong yet with the cabinets so.....

Bad luck for everyone that has had a bad batch of glue, had it myself many years ago, and learnt to make a sample board up, and keep it on file for at least 18months, but I did not do one on that job or the remaining hpl jobs since, but nowts gone wrong yet but Ï'll re instate the samples on future jobs just in case :shock:

I had lots of units we had made delaminate last year all form 2 cans. my supplier says it was Bostik adhesive caned by AFT so far put claims in for over £20,000 and still getting jobs coming back. All work was done between 04/2012 _10/2012

Noth to do with Bostik but I use a spray adhesive and is suitable for high temperatures - its brilliant and doesnt let go. Have used it various materials but not wood as yet

I'd be interested in any claim outcomes. The same batches made there way to NZ and I believe Aust. After initialling admitting fault thay are now ducking for cover and trying to hide behind the bottling company.
Very poor form.

Is there any update on this canister glue problem, does anyone know if it is definitely Bostik and if so is anyone doing anything about it! I've had problems that seem remarkably similar to these.

I would have thought if it is Bostik they would be keen to sort it to keep there reputation!

hi, we changed glue suppliers in April last year after a disagreement with a long standing supplier over a new product that failed, we now have 8-10 jobs where de-lamination has occurred, all of the jobs stem from the first batch of glue bought , we have been laminating for the best part of 13 years and have never had any problems until now, soon as we were alerted of problems we stopped using this glue, we have now taken on a new supplier, we don't know if its an isolated batch or 10 months worth of trouble.
