Spokeshave recommendations

Hi folks

I'm looking to invest in a couple of decent quality 'shaves - 1 flat and 1 round.

I read Alf's review of the Veritas 'shaves, and noted that she complained of the uncomfortable handling. I have also been looking at the LN small shaves.

Any advice welcome.

Axminsters Summer sale catalogue has all three (flat , concave, convex) for the sum of £199, not knowing if you require them all or what ..

just a thought.

I have the set of three Veritas shaves and can concur with Rob they're excellent.

I agree with Rob - the Veritas ones are great, you wouldn't regret it....

I have the round bottomed Veritas one and agree that it is excellent. Couldn't be more different to the Kunz one I had before.

Well just to buck the trend. I have the LN Boggs shaves and they are my most favourite hand tool. So easy to use and adjust and perfect in the hand. The veritas ones seemed cheap to me, but more importantly they didn't seem to cut as nice.

I don't have any, but I dis use Tom's at Brad's Bash and instantly loved them!

Hi Karl - I have a pair of round and flat Veritas 'shaves as well as a scraper 'shave that Philly let me have some time ago. At Pete's recent bash we had a session on 'shave blade sharpening and I had a go at Paul's low angle Veritas 'shave. Ingenious tool but the blade is very short so it's a bit of a bugger to hold for honing...but we adapted and overcame :wink: :wink: :lol: - Rob

Yes, I have the Veritas low-angle shave. I really like it. It works very much like a wooden one, without the disadvantages of some wooden 'shaves. The blades are very small but I hold them in the Veritas small blade holder, which works very well, so honing isn't a problem http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx ... 43078&ap=1

I am lucky to have a Philly shave and the standard Veritas, both are excellent. I also have a cheap screwfix shave ( I think it was a fiver or it was in a box of cornflakes) which has a huge mouth, but I played around with it and it works quite well, the guys at the bash thought so.

I think I am going to go for the Veritas set which Rob has. The blade adjustment seems less fiddly than the LA LV 'shave, and the LN's are considerably more expensive.
