i'm setting up a workshop. Is there any advantage to a spindle moulder over a 'good' router table given the huge cost differential?

Well it depends on what your going to be making.
If your turning out loads of window frames, architrave and skirting board then a spindle moulder is the machine to go for. If your making boxes, cupboard doors and furniture your are going to be OK with a good router in a solid table.

Very different animals IMO. You're always going to want/need a RT. But most hobby woodworkers survive without needing a SM. SM's excel at tennoning and, obviously, moulding.

As Dave says, it depends on what you do.

Hi I am just about to start a furniture making business and am agonising over every purchase.

Thanks Jim

hehe you still didn't specify what sort of furniture.

But I'd guess a spindle has a place in almost all pro-shops. But then if you've never used one before then maybe you should build your business around what you can already do first, then upgrade if you need later.
