I`d mentioned this piece of spalted Beech in George`s 4 bowl thread.

The timber was so dry it crumbled rather than cut as i tried to turn it.
So last week before i went away for work i put it in the garden with a board leaning on it to stop the rain falling directly on in, but hopefully allowing the piece to absorb moisture from the atmosphere.

Obviously when i got home on Friday i noticed one of the kids had knocked the board off & all the rain we`ve had recently had wet it through.

Unperturbed i re-mounted it today & here is the result so far.

I was really surprised just how much water it had absorbed  & before i knew it, me, the lathe & everything inline with the spinning bowl were wet. The rain had penetrated the bowl completely, even as i hollowed the center the shavings were still wet.
On a plus side the tear out was minimal, i presume you get some with spalted timber? This is the first i have turned.
I`ve placed the piece in a cupboard, after cutting as thin a wall as i dare & hopefully when i`m back home next weekend it will be ready for sanding & finishing.

Looks nice Doug. Hope to see it in the flesh at the next meeting.
Actually got into the shed myself this afternoon the first time since I broke my ribs.
The pain is now bearable enough to be able to hold a bowl gouge :D :D

That looks really good Doug. I turned some bicuit grade wood today with no so good results, will post a pic later.

looks good to me so far doug, cant wait to see it finished. Hope it doesn't warp to far on you.
have fun

Thanks for the kind comments guys.

If it`s finished Malc/Steve i`ll bring it along, Mark Hancock is demonstrating so i really don`t want to miss that.
Sorry to hear about the ribs Malc, hope you`re well on the road to recovery now.

Its looking like a "Gordon Banks" Doug ... Great Save ! :D :p

I'm not the most experienced by a long long way, but I've found most spalted beech has a wee bit punky-ness somewhere... I took a tip of Chas's and put sanding sealer on it when I find it now, and it does help a bit. ( or whatever you intend to finish the piece in, oils wise )

It certainly looks good so far.. hopefully it'll not distort too much on you, before you get a chance to finish it right off.

8) 8) :D

Very nice indeed, nice form and nice wood.

I look forward to seeing the finished article! Have you decided what finish to use?

Once again many thanks for your kind comments chaps.

Oakbear,
if you are going on the 12th I'll look forward to seeing you, Stevebuk has told me lots about you ;-)
Hopefully the bowl will be finished also, not sure with what yet though.

JT,
I'll post some better pic's when it's finished

Does anyone know what java script is? & why this bloody Blackberry keeps telling me it's not enabled.

Nice one Doug B,
buy the kids some sweets or something for "helping out" they seem to have done you a good turn(sorry, no pun intended) Frank S.

Rich, Paul, Frank,

Thanks for the kind comments, sorry for the delay in replying.

Rich.

I don`t know if you recognize it, but this is the piece of spalted beech you very kindly gave me. Thanks again.

What's the hold up, i'm impatient to see it finished now!

Yes i'll be there on the 12th. After looking at Mark Hancock's gallery, wild horses wouldn't keep me away! I look forward to seeing you there.

Oakbear.

I've only managed 1 day at home this week (Thursday) & I won't be home till Monday now so there is little chance of finishing it before the meeting.:-(
Though I'm definitely keeping wednesday free as I to am really looking forward to seeing Mark.
