Thought I would post some pics of stuff I've done, not recently as I've been busy roughing out a lot of blanks and trying to rationalise the piles of logs around the place, but just to remind myself to get in some actual proper turning again sometime soon !

Mallee burr from Oz, turned "wrong way up" for a change to feature the outside spikey bit of the burr.

Another mallee burr, right way up.

Willow bowl, slightly spalted.

As SWMBO says, how many more b****y bowls do we need in the house

Cheers, Paul. :D

Nice!

I'm still comtemplating the thimble I managed out of a tree trunk

Ike

Know what you mean Ike, think the trick is not to declare to anybody what it is you're making till you've finished DAMHIKT !

Cheers, Paul. :D

How do you get the outside of the wood looking like that, all the ones I've seen before are left au naturel & rough as a contrast

thats a beutifull piece Chisel, i love burrs , did you have any ballancing trouble ? my lathe is bolted to a worktop and vibrates badly if the wood is unbalanced ,i should have got the legs but they are next, Cutting corners doesnt work!!,

Sorry for not replying Bodrighy, missed your earlier post ! The spiky bits are the natural outside of the burr once the bark is taken off. These are Aussie burrs and if you want them minus the bark you buy them as "washed burrs". Haven't tried it but understand that buying them with the bark on, which is cheaper (but still expensive), and trying to de-bark yourself is pretty tedious and difficult.

Doing something way off centre like that Joekid does cause a few vibration problems ! I wouldn't try it unless you had a seriously heavy lathe, well secured and ballasted, and a good strong chuck. Did it on my big Wivamac lathe but still got a fair amount of movement. Have to watch out for the "ghosting" effect also as obviously there is fresh air in front of the tool alternating with the wood as it spins round, so you have to be very alert and careful so as not too have an accident !

Thought they would make a variation on the usual round bowl theme for a change

Cheers, Paul. :D
