Hello,

About to fit soakers at side abutment, some sources seem to recommend mortaring into brickwork while others maintain that they are flush with brickwork and only the flashing above is mortared in .

Any advice?

Also are soakers always used at side / top abutments?

The soakers shouil just be turned up the wall. You then have a flashing that is held into the raked out joint by small bits of lead rolled up and hammered into place to hold teh flashing, then point in the flashing with mortar

Yes they are used at sides and can be used at the top.
