Well not really, they're slow worms. They live in my compost heap. I have it covered with an old piece of carpet. When I turned it back a couple of days ago there were twelve of them all twisted together. The Grandchildren love to see them but no way will they hold one. The youngest says they move too fast to be slow worms, they must be snakes :D :D

I want to turn the heap over but SWMBO says they must not be disturbed as they will soon be moving to hibernate as the weather gets colder.

Oh! boy, that's brilliant, i'd love to find them in my garden. :D
How long are they Alan?

Wonderful!! You lucky so-and-so!!!

Funnily enough, I have seen 4 grass snakes and an adder in the last few weeks......nearly stepped on one of the grass snakes.........including 2 different snakes 5 minutes apart on the same walk. We don't live next to a nature reserve, this is all just in the hedges and woods around us.

On my last trip to Africa I was taking a pee against a tree in the Okavango delta when a huge (7 foot, I reckon) boomslang shot down out of the tree and into the leaf litter. I was yelling for a camera at the same time as trying to make myself decent, but it was so quick we couldn't find it.

Kevin asks

Between 9 and 12 inches and about as thick as your forefinger although the one in the photo appears to have lost part of its tail. If when picking one up you catch it by its tail, it will immediately drop the last bit off.

Alan

PS Mike if a 7 foot snake dropped by me it would be a clean pair of trousers that I would reach for
