I emailed her the pics and she was delighted...... phewww.... :D

So far so good.

So i take them into work to show the ladies.... 8) yep, you've guessed it "oooh they're lovely, can you make me some too..."? "but with holes in the top, for salt and pepper..."

So here's a query for you guys.... can spalted beech be used ok for salt & pepper pots..? plus.... will the salt 'eat-away' the brass threaded rings at all..?

As always, thanks in advance........

Nick

i love those pots
but i wouldnt make spalted wood into salt and pepper shakers
spalted wood contains fungal spores that can make you ill
im not sure about the brass v salt battle though, i would be interested to find out also

Brass and salt would be a bad idea. The salt plus damp in the air will corrode the brass. If you could get a stainless steel version of the threaded rings it would be much much better. Or you could make threaded boxwood inserts? Or make the boxes with a tight push-fit lid rather than a threaded one?

DEFINITELY don't put salt (or anything similar) near brass and then eat the result. The copper-containing solution produced is probably not acutely toxic, but not good for you! Stainless steel would be fine, as even if it's not best quality and really rustproof, rust is pretty harmless when consumed.

You could use the Crush Grind mechanism to make salt/pepper grinders, keeping the brass parts for decoration but with the thread removed to suit the mechanism who's top just pushes on.

If you really wanted to make a single piece, at the end, you could always adapt this method? It's been around for a little while, since the Romans were wandering about. A change of shape perhapse? This one was just a try at seeing what it was like to make one. Since then I have sold a couple and have to make some more.
