Update:
Thanks to all who replied helpfully.
I finally opted for the Veritas small router plane and it arrived on Thursday.
If you've ever handled Veritas tools you'll know they're wonderfully finished, nice casting with no nasty rough edges anywhere, not covered in junk that needs cleaning off before use, even the blade was sharp enough to cut fine thin shaving straight out of the box.
For those that didn't appreciate the 'cross support' issue, look at the size of the base that crosses behind and in front of the blade for support on thinner stock (as seen above)
I can see why some people might complain that the blade can rotate, but you have to try taking a silly deep cut and not have tightened the lock to provoke the issue.
The one thing that would improve the plane is a screw adjuster for blade depth, as fitted to the miniature and standard router planes, and will be seen on the forthcoming medium router plane.
Overall very happy with the purchase so far. People might think Veritas kit is expensive, I paid £39 for this delivered, but look at the prices old Record 271 and Stanleys go for on eBay you might wait a long time to find one for much less than £30 delivered and the small premium for such a better plane is well worth it.
