The "awkward locking lever" ought to always end up tidily out of the way when tightened. If it doesn't, it might be lacking a fine washer or just need to have its coach bolt style fastener removed and turned 90 or 180° so the screw thread starts in the right place.

Your favourite one is branded "GTL" I think.
They used to sell kits of tools, all rebranded as "Guaranteed Tools Limited" for the diy market in the early 20th century.
Most of the tools were good, apart from their brass plane with the Norris-alike adjuster, which nobody seems to like. But I suspect the main appeal of the kits was that they were sold on the "never-never" - hire purchase - back in the days before easy consumer credit became the norm.
 
Thanks Andy. I think the logo says GTD actually but hard to be sure. My favourite is by far the Stanley by the way. So solid and weighty. I really enjoy using it which is, I'll admit, a strange thing to say about a sliding bevel!
