This is a very good idea… :D (It is also a very, very old practice, which was used in the crafts)

I am very much in favour of this one to one method of passing on of skills and knowledge.

We use a very similar system on another forum (different topic), the biggest initial hurdle was setting up a register and a bases of managing it.

We set up our register with the following heading:
Name
Skill / Knowledge Set
Contact info
General location

With just this basic info, you can look up the skill set you are looking for and then contact the relevant person. From that point one you can discuss what you can do for each other.

Hi,

I'm a complete newcomer to this forum and stumbled across this thread whilst researching another subject which I think will be better dealt with in a separate post. I may, however, have something to contribute here. Whilst ultimately there may be no substitute for actually visiting one another the problems of time and distance seem to be major obstacles. There are a number of techniques used by many businesses which have now developed to an extent that you may be able to try. Does anyone have any experience of participating in a webcast. It is nothing more than a conference telephone call which also allows the group to use video and some interactive programs on your P/C (Powerpoint presentation or whiteboard etc.). Many of you will already have the necessary tools (A P/C, A Broadband connection, a web cam). Now i'm no expert in the subject at all. My knowledge being mainly confined to participating in such. I can, however, vouch for the fact that they work and whilst not giving you everything that an actual meeting would bring it may be a way of getting things started. I would be prepared to help if there is sufficient interest. There is no limit on the number of people that can participate in these events and it offers the benefit of group communication, though some simple rules have to be followed to avoid everyone trying to speak at the same time. Using a web cam you may also be able to demonstrate particular subjects and techniques.

Davew2002 - welcome to the forum....interesting idea. I have no knowledge of these web cam thingies, but would ask a question. I assume that these cameras are attached somehow to your PC, what happens then if your workshop is 100' away at the end of the garden and the PC is in the upstairs study?. Just a thought - Rob

Always been a problem.

1: Move the shed :D

2: Use a long USB cable (there is a physical limit cant recall what it is without looking it up)

3: Use a laptop

4: Use a wireless webcam.

I have broadband in the workshop, so that's a start.
All I need now is someone who knows what they're doing.

Actually that's not a bad idea, my work is all commercial stuff so probably not of much interest, so if anyone local to me,ColinC, wants to demonstrate over t'internet at my workshop you'd be most welcome, evenings no problem.

Dom

Hi Dom

That sounds like a good idea and I might just take you up on that :-k

If I did, what would people like to see  :)

Yebut all the sawdust then'll fall down between the keys - Rob

Some people really need to get up to speed with this technology, if they did they would realise there is no environment which is too harsh for today’s hardware. Much of what is on the internet is a testament to the fact that it can operate despite coming into contact with large quantities of Baby oil and interference from battery operated equipment. Sawdust in a keyboard is the least of our worries.

I'm heartened by DomValente & ColinC who seem to be up for the challenge. Unfortunately I appear to be somewhat remote from you both as I hail from city that once was home to Waring & Gillow. Having sown the seed I am more than willing to assist in any way I can. I will undertake further research on the techy side of the problem, whilst you gents concentrate on the substance of the event. Is anyone else able to offer assistance ??

and lets not descend to the level of someone offering copious amounts of baby oil

Not wishing to pour cold water on that one, but MDF dust will see off most computer hardware....... and it tends to get everywhere, too! That's why industrial woodworking machinery tends to have flat membrane keyboards and IP67 rated PLC/electronics enclosures - and still the switch gear gets clogged with dust, arcs and fails over time. In a trade woodworking environment floppy drives (as found on PLCs) can last as little as 12 months in a dusty environment and hard drives are similarly affected by MDF dust whilst boards, power supplies, etc seem reletively unaffected - at least that was my experience running a CNC router.

I'll not be able to make Nick's bash so if the technicalities can be sorted out I'd be one very interested viewer.

Would it be possible to do this with a camcorder?
Dom

Yes. The other possibility would be to do a video for distribution after the event? This is what has been done on an overseas forum I sometimes visit.

Dave

Colin,

Will start this project of yours off, as my planer is broken and you need your worktop fitted how about a using your planer and I'll fit your worktop. I know there are a couple of other guys on the forum from Essex so if they are interested we could all meet up at yours and sort your kitchen out for you. If not the offer still stands Dave
