Planers and thicknessers take no prisoners though:
Do NOT attempt to investigate with the machine running -- always physically disconnect the machine from the mains (and make sure you can see the pulled-out plug to prove it).
When I was a child, my grandfather came up from the mill to their cottage one evening, very sombre. I didn't understand but could tell something was very wrong from the tone of the adults' voices. Later my mother told me that there had been a planer accident (they were big Wadkins). I believe someone lost a hand.
There wouldn't be bits left big enough to be worth sewing back on again.
