Hi Guys,

A friend gave me a very old oak gate post and asked for a bowl in return.

This is the result, complete with nail hole and associated staining from the tannin reactions. The nail was long gone when he gave it to me.

Finished with Chestnut Foodsafe on the inside, and Chestnut HardWax oil on the outside.

He was chuffed with it, as apparently they have big peanuts in their house

Good enough to keep the supplier of turning staples happy and good enough for recipients purpose makes it good enough for anybody that counts.
The fact that you are happy with it and it's a respectable bit of turning to boot makes it a worth a "Job Well Done" tick.

I'm interested to see you were able to get such nice wood from the post. I have four old pots and had marked them down as firewood. Time to reassess:)

The posts really did look like nothing when they came, took about 1/2" off all round on the bandsaw, back to sound wood, and what you see was the end result.

Unfortunately, I haven't got any photos of the original post

Excellent bit of recycling with a happy result all around. Good solid functional owl. Ideal for purpose. Another tick from me =D>

It's great to see how well the oak looks after many years braving the elements.
Chris.
