Am after a new shoulder plane but there is so much to choose from please please please help me with this task do i go LN / veritas /clifton or the new new stanley prem range ????????????????????? :D

What size are you looking for? Small, medium or large? What kind of work do you intend to use it for? You must have something in mind...

Personally, I've used the Lie-Nielsen at college (I think it's the medium size?) but I still prefer the Veritas one. It's well made and the blade gives excellent performance but, the Veritas plane has more in the ergonomics department - you can position knobs or handles in several positions to suit whatever work you are doing.

Veritas Large Shoulder Plane. That's the one I settled on. Liked the adjustable handle and feel of it. Went for the Large as I can use it on edge and use it with a shooting board to make models.
Depends on what your uses are really.

Look at my avatar....... that one

Soon as I got this I sold the Veritas large :)

If budgets are a constraint (I only paid £100 over the Veritas for the Bridge City), then I would go for the Veritas over the LN

Hi.

I have held the Veritas one and it didn't fit me at all, see if you can have a play with them before you buy.

Pete

Thinking of a medium mainly for work on tenons and shoulders !!!!!!!!!!
has any one played with the new stanley ones yet are very cheap on tilgear ? or is it to good to be true ???????????????? :) :) :)

I've looked at them all and it'd probably be the medium veritas

Don't you find your shooting board gets inexplicably narrower...? :?

Apart from my Aled Dafis one :) - I use the medium LV - it's the right size for me.

For the uninitiated I think that what Alf is alluding to is the blade on a shoulder plane extends to the side edges - unlike a bench or shooting plane (LN No.9) - and therefore the shooting board edge will be cut into on each cut.

The blade is adjustable, side to side, innit. Not much, but enough.

I agree, the new Stanley looks too good to be true - it's even cheaper than their standard one! I'm waiting for a proper review of one, nothing found so far. As I need it purely as an occasional "get out of a hole" tool, rather than an everyday one, that saving makes it very tempting, however good the Veritas is.

I sold my big LN shoulder plane and now use the medium LV, but I also have the small bronze LN with the rosewood wedge, which is very pleasant - Rob

I bought the Clifton 3110. Can also be used as a bull nose and chisel plane. It's based on the old Record 311 but built to a far higher standard.

Cheers

I'd have to agree with Paul (as I so often do). If I had to have only one shoulder plane the Clifton take a lot of beating. Fits in the hand beautifully so great for one handed use - and with the bullnose and chisel plane options it's versatility is second to none.

I was. However adjustable it seems an odd choice for shooting, but I suppose as long as one's aware of the potential difficulty, why not?

So I wonder if this thread is helping the OP... Surely there's some make of shoulder plane that hasn't been recommended yet? HNT Gordon still in business? What about Philly?
