Philly's been round today to let me have the latest shoulder plane :tool: which he made for me, free and gratis..... so now I've got really good shoulder plane. Mind, Philly didn't go away empty handed as I let him have a set of respectable firmer chisels with some AOH's recently made with yew striker buttons (Alf's Octagonal Handles, for the uninitiated) and the bottle of Titebond Glue that Martin left in the front of the Landy #-o

.....so now am a very happy bunny and any abuse hurled my way will simply be water of a duck's back   . This has to be a superior gloat to Martins 'drive by' saw gloat the other day...... so fire away
- Rob....whose going to have a play with his new toy...and a big 'thank you' to Phill for the time and effort.

I don't beleive that Philly has to give his tools away just to get a gloat, absolutely disgusting.

Have to say though, nice shoulder plane Rob.

Are you going to AP this weekend?

Very nice, Rob and a very nice gesture by Phil. Enjoy it (as if you need any encouragement   )

Cheers

Is that a different marker gauge for each day of the week I see behind you?

Nice gloat and a nice clean workshop ...

I must get a brush.
I must get a brush. I must...

Lovely plane there Rob. Nice one Phil, a very nice thing to do

Just awaiting the 'firmer chisel' post now

Glad you liked it, Rob! :D

I got the brass from my local branch of "Smiths". Google "metal brass and smiths". Cost about £50 for a meter!!!
There are some step-by-step pics here...
Cheers

Very nice Rob and by the way you suck

I will tell you the same when I see you on Saturday Philly  :)
Well made Philly :)

Here's Rob's chisels that he kindly donated. Many thanks Rob, they are cracking!! \:D/

Philly,
thanks for the master class on shoulder plane making...inspiring. I'd love to have a go at something like that one day but at £50/m for the brass, it won't be any time soon. I'love to see some more details if the blade making process too, what steel? hardening/tempering? etc.

Have had a play around with the shoulder plane....needed a little bit of fettling around the mouth to open it a fraction for my use, but it does now work very well indeed so a big :eek:ccasion5: to Phill for spending the time and effort involved - Rob

Nice plane Phil and Rob. 8)

The best gloat on that picture though, is the fact that Rob actually has a sheet of perspex covering his chisels!! Not content with hiding them boxed away, he has to show them off even when not in use and keep them dust-free!!!! Blimey that's cool... :D

Very pleased that it works and that your happy! I made the mouth on the tight side. I still haven't learned the art of filing a mouth smaller....
Hey Gary - don't tell anyone but Rob also has a cover for his router table. How posh is that!!!!
Seriously, Rob's shop is mucho organised. I can only aspire to such skills.
Cheers

Gary - the reason I cover them is for one of safety really. Imagine that you are concentrating on your woody type project and over the course of a session an accumulation of crud and tools builds up in the tool tray at the back of the bench...you go to reach for somat just underneath the chisels and proceed to lift it upwards. Without the clear acrylic guard there's a better than even chance that you'll slice open the back of your hand on a chisel blade  , which is something I've done more than once, so all chisels and other nasty sharp tool thingies are guarded, whenever practical.
The cover for the router table also serves as an additional surface to store stuff....got the elm back panels on there at the mo' with the finish that's drying off - Rob
