I've been building a set of shelves for about 18 months now. Finally, I've managed to screw them together and get cascamite (as was) all over them. Hooray!

I've applied a coat of liberon pale blond shellec.. and then I read the Charlesworth book. If I take his advice I'll be doing these shelves for another ten years!

The shelves are for cook books and will get a bit of traffic. My question is, how many more coats do I need and how much sanding or wire wooling for for a secure finish.

I was going to slap another couple of coats on before giving a quick going over with wire wool.

The shelves are in ash, and not very clean ash at that (quite a few knots, some olive and the odd hole).

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

You will need to apply several coats before cutting back, this will flatten the finish and remove brush marks, if you can, finish with a rubber in the traditional manner, I put a post on here on French Polishing, try to follow that to your best for a superior finish.
Derek.

Thanks for that! I've applied about six coats and am about to rub it down with 0000 wire wool. Didn't read your thread til after I'd done it. Duh! Still, it seems to be a nice finish.
