Hi All, My sedgwick planer thicknesser will be delivered in the next couple of days so have just looked at upgrading my electics can any users tell me what size of circuit breaker they are running their machine off.
Alan.
Single phase by the way

We ran our single phase Sedgewick planer on a 16 amp supply in our old workshop but needed to put a 20amp breaker in when we moved to our new workshop as it would trip the breaker on startup. Bought the 20 amp breaker at Screwfix and had to wait a day as it was not a stock item

The circuit breaker if its an MCB needs to be class C rather than a domestic class B. The difference is that it allows a longer time for the initial surge of current when the motor is turned on to occur before it trips. The common fault is to use a much higher rated class B MCB to achieve the same effect. However, this would mean that you would have to upgrade all of your wiring, connectors etc to the same rating or higher than the MCB. The fuse is there to protect the wiring / circuit not an individual from electrocution. I.e, to prevent a fire.

You will probably not need any more than a 16A class C. But check the machine handbook for the specified rating. I have th 16" CP Sedgwick P/T running off a 16A class C without it tripping. This enables me to use standard 16A plug connectors.
