I had an episode of "How it's Made" (Quest) running last night, whilst I read
the paper.

I saw something out of the corner of my eye that made me put down the paper,
and hit rewind.

It's the making of a (fairly) mundane walking stick.

Either watch the whole thing (it's only 5 minutes)
or skip to 2:37 onwards.

 =D>

Well, I see what you mean - very scary.

It would be interesting to know whether the method has been debated at length in the factory, and justified on the grounds that guarding would somehow make the job more dangerous, or if it's just a case of management not thinking about the danger. On the face of it, there is an obvious risk of flesh touching the revolving blade, but we can't see any other precautions that might be in place, such as at least an attempt at isolating the worker from interruption or distraction while he's making those cuts.

Perhaps they removed the guard temporarily simply for the sake of filming?

Ah yes, like all those US tablesaws on YouTube

Apart from the fact that he's a suicidal fool, the guy has some
pretty "rad skillz" (as I believe the young people would put it :D )

Frightening. I wonder what the rate of survival of fingers may be. "Who's calling? Ouch!..."

Interesting. Thanks BB. The voice over was done by Chip or Dale, unless there was something wrong with the soundtrack!

Dohhh! I see Busy Builder beat me to it! :D

Heh. I saw the episode on TV and found the ep on youTube at work, with the sound turned off...

Looks like the uploader got the frame rate wrong.
