Hi, I need to buy a circular saw. I started looking at De-Walt etc but I have been shown two Mafell saws, one with a rigid aluminium track and the other smaller (42mm cut) with the flexible track.

I wondered if anyone has any experience with these?

Hi colinc,

I know that engineer one has one of the small Mafell saws with the track, so you might want to pm him if he misses this :)

Hi Colin, can't help you with the maffell model as I have the festool - also a good saw and track if your looking for a range of tools to compare.

What is the collective term for a group of colins? (my real name is also colin - but don't tell anyone, it'll destroy the myth)

I was going to start a tread to see how many Colin's are on here  :)

There seems to be a few :)

A shoal! Colin is French for Hake. My 18 month old daughter's fishy kiddie meals are usually "Colin" :D

I have used both of these and I'm very impressed. :)

ColinC , actually I feel the need to call you Ian, after seeing your mugshot in the rogues gallery........... :D

As anyone else commented on the likeness?????

I use a clamp and guide and a Hilti saw . The clamp and guide is great because theres no need for messing around with speed clamps and the Hilti is the best saw i've ever used the only problem is its broken on me twice . I hope Hilti have sorted this out now as it really is a good saw .
Ive used the festool system and the only thing i didn't like was having to clamp the guide down with speed clamps , other than that its a great bit of kit .
But i think the best would have to be here http://www.dm-tools.co.uk/product.php/section//sn/MAFPSS3000 :tool: (hammer) (hammer) (hammer)

Jason - you mention having to clamp the festool down, in what circumstance was that? The reason I ask, is because ive used my festool quite extensively during the workshop project, and havn't needed to use clamps once. The rubber strips and the weight of the saw on the rail keeps eveyrhting very solid and in place.

I've ben using a Festool TS55 for the last 10 months and have no complaints, I bought extra clamps for the rail but as of yet have not used them as the rail grips most surfaces by itself.

Bit of confusion here, I'm colinc and there's colin c here too!! He's the tall, handsome one with a picture, I'm sort of shorter, fatter and nothing like as good a woodworker!!!

Oooooops, dont I feel the fool.... (homer)

sorry Colin, i did mean the other colinc (just to add to the confusion.)

and majorly off topic, sorry guys..

My friendly, local (and ever patient) tool shop has loaned me a Mafell KSP 40 Flexsystem to try out for the weekend. That's superb service isn't it?

Sort of makes you realise why you should buy from the local guy and not just source the cheapest buy on the internet or from the sheds.

Am looking forward to trying this one out. My only reservation is that the track is perhaps shorter than I would like. My feeling is that an 8ft board capability is to be preferred.

ColinC (the older one)

I have a fan :D

well i hope you like the mafell, to me the advantage is that you can
set and hold the plunge depth, so you can trench and or kerf.
the minor disadvantage is the short track, but you can extend it with
other mafell tracks, just not a flexible one.

the real advantage of the smaller saw is that it and the track can be
packed into a small box. i have found it very accurate and usable,
but then generally i get my panels cut to a handier size, so do not
need to rip the whole length.

the other one to look at is the later model which has a larger diameter
blade, and an attachment which allows you to cut angles on boards up to
16 inches wide. but i also understand that you can adapt it to work
with the smaller saw.

i have found that you do not need the clamps all the time, but they
have value too. the thing to learn is where to set the track against
the cutting line.

all the best for the weekend usage.

paul
