Please be understanding of a cynical old git but I must vent my bewilderment re. media coverage of M. Jackson Esq. deceased. He was undoubtedly a very accomplished singer, dancer and entertainer but 6 pages in The Times following a 2 1/2 page obituary (more than deceased Nobel Laureates for medicine, peace etc., presidents and the odd Pope get) is way over the top. Adding the fact that the only program on TV that I enjoy, was cancelled for yet another tribute. The world has definitely gone doodle alley.
Rant over. Leaving the room .
Jim :?

Hi,

I swapped radio stations 3 times to on saturday to find some thing by some one else, I put a CD on in the end.

Pete

Its a gift to the media - loads of copy - minimal effort

Much the same as the death of the Queens eldest son's ex-wife

Heck Farrah Facet died the same day??
But how often do you get a singer like Jackson dieing?? He was renting a house for 100.000.00 dollars a month...13 bathrooms....and he was 500,000,000.00 in debt.Neverland Ranch was in ruff repair...but he dies and his sales go way up??Well somebody has to pay those bills, now the fight is over his kids and whatever else they can sell of his....He does own a lot of Beatles songs...

I'm another who thinks 'he died, so what?'. Yes, it warrents a bit of news coverage but many people die and don't even get a second thought or even a mention.

All the coverage seems to be the same thing over and over with nothing new or of more interest. I heard the story the first time, I don't need to hear it over and over and over and over and over.......

Why is the world so bloody obsessed with singers, I like music and song but for crying out loud

Agree 100%...Michael Jackson died. Move on. More worrying thing is that the Internet was put under very severe strain with all that Twittering and other mindless c**p.

He may not have actually died! The cynic in me saw this and thought - well that's his way out of the lime light and debt - Record sales now gone back through the roof fortune back on the way up... Pay off a few officials is a small price to pay...

one last bit of plastic surgery to get back to 'normal' - the next thing you know - doing the Sunday shopping around wallmart with Elvis :)

and yeah - I was actually wondering 'what else happened in the world today' when the media didn't shut up about it...

I see there was an obituary to Sky Saxon in The Guardian who was a very influential musician and hardly a word has been said. Also Davey Graham a brilliant and also very inspirational singer and guitarist died a few months ago and barely got a mention. But Jackson is part of the celebrity age we live in and it is almost as if we know these people better that our own families. But what a godsend for all those MPs embroiled in the expenses fiasco to have a story like this come along to hog the headlines.

Sky Saxon Also Davey Graham

Never heard of either of them and I think that's the point, isn't it?

No Tom, I don't think it is the point. Michael Jackson's legacy was good music and dance but also the ability to ruin himself both physically and financially and leaving a huge debt. Hopefully, many will be paid off from returns from record sales if the hangers on and legal bods don't carve it up before hand. Anyway, the chaps dead and I shouldn't be castigating him before he's even in the box!
Cheers,
Jim

Well I think he sold more records than the people Soulfly mentioned and if those half a billion people liked his song and dance, then surely that's an obvious reason for so many tributes ? It's not like he's the first actor/singer/princess/footballer that's died and the media have gone OTT covering it. It's business and if people consume it, they'll make it. The MJ business will continue for decades to come. It'll only stop when (if) no one likes the music anymore.

Just because you didn't like him or his music, doesn't mean millions didn't. I was not in the least bit interested when Diana, George Best, Jade Goody, etc died.

The coverage is waaaaaay over the top. Fortunately it didn't occupy much space in the Telegraph this morning.

I suggest you all stop watching telly/ listening to radios /reading newspapers, twittering, dump the ipods/tripods/bipods and God knows what pods get on with a bit of work :)

Michael Jackson - one of only a handful of people who can be recognised virtually everywhere in the world.

Don't forget - even with antiquated 1970's media, just how influential Elvis' death was.

And then Pri*£^"" D(!N* - it does not happen that often and usually not at the expense of 'real' news (unless the govt. have good reason).

"To each they're own"

What do you expect when one of the most famous people in the world over the last 30 years dies, especially when he has a back catalogue like his and lifestyle that weird. You can't argue he was one a of a kind. And odd

I just don't enjoy his music so the (understandable) glut on the radio at the moment is a bit tiresome for me because I tend to put the radio on in the background quite often.

The only news I take in is Radio 4 in the morning. All the rest, including most newspapers, I find over-sensationalised dumbed down ******** for the brainless.

I don't sit in front of the TV, preferring to watch specific programs or do something else altogether, so I've not seen any TV about him.

I agree Matt and I was a fan. I've only watched one of the tributes. Not read any of the papers and don't mind hearing it on the radio as it's all good music. I wasn't too bothered about missing the shows next month until I saw the rehersal pictures and now I'm a bit gutted. Would have been a sensational performance. Tho he probably would have died during one of the performances if he was that ill.
