Sash window restore

I've never seen this in any windows. it's like a gunstock in the top sash. it's in a cottage in Northumberland I'm staying in. also there's no weights or boxes or evidence of them being there( bit dangerous tbh)

I made a few sliding sash windows for a customer who had a little cottage in Ireland, he didn't want any weights, boxes or even springs in them. He said in the area he was from it was traditional to just have a small stick next to the window that you used to prop the sash open :dunno:
 
the ones that open have a hole drilled to take a bit of dowel. it's in a remarkably nice town called Warkworth.its full of lovely joinery doors and windows. but there's obviously a quality joiners making some beautiful victorian style painted porches with steep slate roofs.
I'll get some photos and open a thread.
