Sanding sealer? How to...

A rough old bit of pine I wanted to look smooth.
Had sanding sealer for a while, not used it.
Said apply with a cloth...
Not easy?
When dry, sanded down and yes, left a good finish, but big areas of 'white' sealer which needed sanding off.

Any advice on it's use please?

If it's solvent based, all I remember is that it dries incredibly quickly so get it on and spread fast.
Then sand.

Yes, Rustins. I had to thin it with Turps.

I think I had cellulose type for turning. I made a proper mess first time I tried it

It's probably cellulose, it would need cellulose thinners not white spirit. Shellac sanding sealer needs meths, iirc.

At the club S/S was always diluted 50/50 before use.

I have allways diluted 50/50 if used neat it is thick and sticky.

Some Sanding Sealer is Shellac, (which I prefer), so needs to be diluted with methylated spirit.

As supplied, I dilute it 50/50.

Turps did dilute it - though 50:50 would surely make it rather thin?
Rustins... I 'll have a look see if it is Shellac based.

I have Liberon sanding sealer which is shellac based and you can thin with methylated spirits or IPA and yes it does dry very quickly!
I have not used it for a while but used a very fine squirrels hair flat brush to apply it which had to be performed super quickly before the solvent evaporated.
TBH have not used it much since achieving a better finish off the PT and perhaps using a sharp cabinet scraper I found it was unnecessary.
