What is the best method to clean up a sanding belt? Any advice please, wire brush, solvent etc?

You can get sanding belt cleaning sticks off the bay which do the job just fine,Screwfix do them to

And old tube of silicone that has cured works very well and is basically free.

Balled up plastic carrier bags if you are really stuck...

Artificial wine bottle "corks" are what I use......I cant remember where I read about this but it certainly works okay for me..

As per novocaine above - ESPECIALLY if the soles are crepe rubber (remember the old Teddy Boys' "BCs"?).

Actually a block of pretty hard crepe rubber is what I bought from Axi and it works very well AND lasts a long time (added to an order to get reduced-cost postage) .

Thanks for all the suggestions above. I now have a period of experimentation before buying a genuine cleaning stick. I do wonder as to the composition of these sticks? Prices vary tremendously online, I wonder why.

ps on the subject of sanding belts, does anyone know why they are intended to travel in only the direction indicated?

It's due to which way the join is configured. You imagine trying to use a loop of sandpaper - going the wrong way the lip of sandpaper would catch.

Helpful hint, take them off the feet first.

The lap/bump jointed belts were a problem if used backwards but the modern flat butt jointed belts I use happily run in both directions.
