Sandalwood

Not so long ago I bought a job lot of turning blanks from someone who was having a clearout. Most of it was easy enough to identify but I have several mystery pieces that smell like Sandalwood. The pieces are very heavy but I haven't cleaned up any surfaces to get a better look at the grain as yet. I tried googling for info on this wood and couldn't find very much at all.
So, if I can ask the members here who might have worked with or have knowledge of this wood, how likely is it that it is Sandalwood? If not, what else might it be? What is it like to work with?

OK, I cleaned up a couple of sides of one blank. This is 70x70x610mm and weighs 3270g.
One side has some knots and swirly grain but planed fairly well and the adjacent side has straight grain and planed quite badly with lots of tear out although that could be down to my limited planing experience.

Once you worked it, you would definitely know if it was sandalwood. The smell is un-mistakeable, especially if you've been in a catholic church during a high service, it's what they burn in the chalice

I have a wristwatch made of Sandalwood. It is fairly dark though - think there are quite a few different types, it is a sort of generic name...

Looks a lot like Purpleheart, If it goes purple after a little while you'll know what it is :lol:
