Anyone else having problems with Safari 4?
I am using an imac PPC G5, MAC OSX 10.4
I loaded Safari 4 from Software update - I had not used the earlier Beta version

Since upgrading to Safari 4 I no longer seem to be able to use my Nationwide online banking facility. I can log in and access all my accounts but when I try to do a payment transaction Safari just sits and waits...and waits.. until I get bored and reload the page after about 10 minutes.

I've spoken to Nationwide's support team and they have looked at my log, they can see that I have logged in OK but they are not receiving the transaction requests. Hence the fault is at my end.

I can use online banking elsewhere without any issues. I have tried Firefox and get the same problem.

Are there likely to be some new security settings in Safari 4 that are causing these problems?

Cheers

Andy

Hi Andy

if you'd like to pm me your login and password then I can have a go for you  I have £1000000 that i need to deposit into your account.

Seriously, a quick search on the Apple forum page suggests some people are having difficulty but, here's the strange thing, they are Ok with Firefox. Other than that can't really help since banks have different front-end security systems etc and i don't have a Nationwide account.

EDIT: have you tried the suggestions here?

Thanks Roger,
Yep, I went through all those settings with the Nationwide's support team - emptied the cache, deleted all history etc. Still no joy.

I too had read some Mac forums which I why I thought I'd try Firefox.

My ISP is clueless, maintaining that there is nothing within the router etc that would prevent the problems and of course they point the finger at Safari.

Cheers

Just tried Opera a number of times in the past half hour

After about 5 mins I get the EM "CONNECTION CLOSED BY REMOTE SERVER"

Just tried camino with same results.

At the bottom of the browser windows I notice it says "waiting for olb2.nationet.com..... " Yet the nationwide support team state that their server is not seeing my request.

Is it possible that rather than a browser setting being changed that Safari 4 has managed to tweek a network type setting on the Mac or the router? If it has I could be beyond my depth trying to sort it out.

Cheers

Andy

Can't really help much further, Andy. It is impossible for your software to alter the router setting since the router will/should ask for an admin password. I'm wondering if there is an incompatibility between 10.4, safari 4 and nationwide's system.

We are on 10.6 now

Is there a firewall in 10.4 in security settings?i can't remember. Might be worth looking in security settings in system refs

edit it's under sharing

Andy

If you think it might be network related it might be worth creating a new network connection and trying that:

Network preferences.
Click Drop Down Box next to Location and click Edit Locations.
Click + to create new network location
Apply and see if that fixes things.
If not delete the new connection you created.

If you've tweaked something on the router you could try resetting the router.

Not that hopeful but might be worth a try.

Cheers

Roger I've found the firewall and switched it off - re loaded MAc and router and tried again - no joy.

Gidon, thanks for the suggestion. Just tried a new network, reloaded mac and router and tried again no joy ](*,)

The bar at the foot of the window that states "waiting for olb2.nationet.com....." also says "completed 2 of 3 items" is this a clue?

If I cannot fix this soon I may have to close the account, problem is I can't transfer out all of the money Grrrrrr!!

Cheers

Which version of safri 4 are you on? Also Java and JavaScript.

You could try creating a new user account and try accessing it frm there.

Also try looking in the Java logs and other logs in console..might be some sort of clue.

You could post on the apple forum as well.

If you go into console and look at the install log...then search for safari..that should take you to the entries for when you loaded safari 4. I think that maybe the install loaded maybe or altered java or java script.

Now if you had Leopard you would have had Time Machine and you could then have rolled back to Safari 3. But you probably didn't want to hear that!

The fact that none of those browsers now work suggests something common ie something like Java.

EDIT: Have you worshipped at the Holy Grail and run Disk Util/Repair Permissions?

Roger, thanks for all the suggestions. The kids are back from school now so I can't try until they've gone to bed. I'll let you know.

Cheers

Roger, I do not think my problem relates to the experiences of those on the moneysavingexpert thread. I've been able to access the banking facility without issue. I've also tried at least half a dozen times at different times of the day. It is only the transaction stage that freezes.

Safari Version 4.0.3 (4531.9)

Java J2SE 5.0

I cant find JavaScript but found all these:-
Java 1.3.1 plugin settings Vesion 10.0.2
Java 1.4.2 Plugin settings version 11.9.0
Java Preferences 11.9.0
Java Web start 11.9.0

This are the latest things I've tried.

Created a new account - no joy

I will post one of the apple forums although having read a few it seems that there are many disgruntled safari 4 users out there.

I have no anti-virus things only that what comes with the Mac

Console ! Never been there before. It looks like safari4 was loaded on Jun28

TIme machine eh? sounds wonderful. I guess your suggesting I splash out for snow leopard then. I though it was only for Intel Macs?

I've run repair disc permissions in disk utilities and no joy.

I also upgraded to Itunes 9 when it appeared in the software update having read your other thread and a few mac support forum messages it seems that there are issues there too.

After 4 years of trouble free mac usage I'm getting very pissed off at this.

Pete,
interestingly when I use the Nationwide's checking service it thinks I have the following

It also says that Firefox 3 is supported and I have the same problems there too.
This is waht they detect when I log in from firefox

I am going to the inlaws later so will try to access the account on a PC/Windows.
I might just have to live with this and hope a future update of Safari solves the problem.

Any proxy servers inadvertently set? Go into Java preferences and look at the network settings. Otherwise I'm out of ideas. Check proxy settings in network as well.

Roger
I cannot see any proxy server options in the Java Preferences window.

In the Network preferences proxy window I have this

Maybe, Andy. It has to be something that is global withon your Mac set-up that has been inadvertently altered by Safari. Have you thought about reverting back to Safari 3?

EDIT: The maybe refers to a new update to Safari fixing the problem.

Java preferences on my Mac is under Advanced.

No, Leopard was 10.5 and Time Machine came with it. Get a cheapie external firewire or USB drive and away you go. I reverted to iTunes8 and was able to do it easily with Time Machine.

You are correct in that Snow Leopard is Intel only but to be honest I'm not convinced that the incremental improvement with it is a 'must-have'.
