So I upgraded my bandsaw at weekend and bought a Sabre 350 at the roadshow at Snainton Woodturning last weekend. What an awesome machine! You can change blades and reset the bearings at the drop of a hat. Not something I’ve been used to. One thing that is a bit strange though is when I came to fit the rail the rail that the fence mounts on. It’s a simple fixing of 2 bolts through the side of the table. There is a small amount of play in the fixing holes so that the rail can be set parallel to the table surface. The handbook says to use a straight edge on the table surface and measure the gap between the rail and this straight edge at the front and back of the table, and set the rail to be parallel to the table surface. A little fiddly but I eventually got these two measurements to be the same. Job done I thought. When the fence was fitted to this rail all looked good till I tried a Starrett square against the fence. The top edge of the fence was tilted towards the blade by nearly 2mm. There does not seem to be any adjustment for squaring the fence to the table surface other than by “tilting” the mounting rail. After a great deal of fiddling I eventually moved the rail whilst the fence was attached and tightened the two bolts when the fence was square to the table. The fence is now true to the table and blade and remains so when moved anywhere on the rail, including the right hand side of the blade. Sorted. Or is it? My mounting rail is now about 1.5 mm Higher at the front of the table than it is at the back. This suggests that the fence casting is not machined true, and I have compensated for this by maladjusting the mounting rail. The saw cuts well and true in all positions now so I’m unsure if I actually have a problem or not. I have entered a dialogue with RP to ask for they’re opinion. Has anyone else with a Sabre found this problem?
