Hello All

New member and pretty much a new woodworker but loving learning.

My question:
When routing dado's so they piece of stock fits snug, how do you do it? Do you have a router bit that is the exact width of the stock (is this even possible?) OR do you make a jig like one shown on the wood whisperer for exact width?

I much appreciate any advise you can offer.

Cheers
Simon

If you're making a dado for sheet stock (MDF or ply) you'll almost never get a router bit that exactly fits the material, so I always plan on an undersized bit and two passes to hit the width precisely. Personally I use the Bridge City Tools Kerfmaker jig and it produces the correct dado width first time every time, so much so that I don't even bother with test cuts anymore...I wish I hadn't said that, I'll probably ruin the next dado now!

I use a straight edge and a fractional baseplate (basically trend's trenching baseplate) with 0.5-4mm graduations.

If you do a forum search for "exact width dado jig" or "adjustable width dado jig" you'll see a few threads with examples.
