Hi
I have just joined this group, need to replace my Hitachi 1/2" router with a new router and need a quiet one with soft start 1/2" Can anyone suggest one
Thanks Dick

Hi Dick, and welcome.

As to your question, hand held or table use? Personally I'd vote for the flagship Makita for hand held use and the big Triton for the table. However i'ts likely there'll be as many opinions as there are routers.

Good luck choosing, I don't envy you the task!

I dont do much hand held routing so cant comment on the best router for that but I have used the big Triton in a table for a while and can thouroughly recommend it.
The plus points are;
A large base plate opening.
Rack and pinion height adjustment with fine adjuster (so no need for Router Raisers etc).
Cutter change from above the table, you fully plunge the router (using the rack and pinion) and the collet nut appears above the table surface (remember it is upside down in the table) the spindle automatically locks, you then just need the spanner to fit/remove the cutter.
You can easily remove one of the plunge return springs to reduce the tension when upside down.
Minus points, havent really found any.
It has all the usual soft start, variable speed, dust control etc. I think it comes with half and quarter inch collets and I think 8mm is also available.
For hand held use you can easily release the rack and pinion and use it as a normal plunge router. Only real disadvantage is the fence which is not as good as several on the market (IMHO).

Hope this helps - Martin.

Hi Dick

Welcome to the forum.

If you are only going to use it in a table I would recommend the Triton, but if you also want to use it handheld then I'd go for the DW625.

Cheers
Neil

Thanks for the info I will try a Triton as I mostly use routers in a table. I already have the super jaws ,work center etc. and they are well thought out.
Dick

Have to admit the DW625 is a wonderful beast with very precise adjustments and smooth action which I quickly purchased after the P-Pro 2050 (B & Q generic). The latter is a brute but is accurate and powerful enough for consistent repetitive work in a table, but absolutely terrible to adjust.

I wish now that instead of the DW625, I'd have gone for the Triton because of its ease of adjustability and given that I'm now using the table more.

There's some good offers on at Triton at the moment, but if you're inclined, don't be put off by their rather sexist and pointless "Have we got your attention" bra shots
