you must come at your final height by winding into it. If that makes any sense at all?

Makes sense to me. Sounds like what I mentioned about adjusting up to the height guage rather than down.

Didn't realise the big Triton doesn't have above table height adjustment  - or have i misunderstood ?

I'm not sure. It's listed on the Freud UK site but I can't find a UK retailer. I know Freud UK sell direct. I think the price is around £250  Which is quite high considering I paid £50 for the Triton. I won't be upgrading this side of xmas (but don't quote me ;) )

No the big Triton does not have above the table height adjustment. I'm sure something could be rigged up but I'm not so good with mechanics (or much else tbh). As it is, the winding mechanism can be clunky without the spring. With the spring in you have to use your other hand to physically push the router up (because you have got the weight to assist.) This can lead to problems and basically it's not ideal.

I've got a Freud 2000 normally mounted on a Woodrat. On the rare occasions I use my Triton table I leave the upper (lower when inverted) plunge bar on.

Cutter height is then roughly adjusted using the plunge bar which is easily reached under the table without crouching and final height adjustment is easily carried out by tweaking the fine height adjuster by reaching under the table with a minimum amount of bending and stretching. Not perfect I know, but it works for me and I've also got a dodgy back (but not as bad as yours I suspect!)

Does the Freud have as good above table bit changing as the Triton?

Like others I think the table mounted Triton is a great bit of kit (it does have some issues) but that bit changing really is the dogs danglies. Lost count of the number of skinned knuckles before I got it.

If I can have above table adjustment and above table bit changing then I'd seriously consider changing.

I had also thought about the woodpecker and wondered if in combination with the Triton you could have the best of both worlds (you loose some height but only about 3/8").

Good points there Stuart. To be honest, if I was going to spend £240 on the Freud then I might as well buy a router lift system instead. The only reason for maybe going for the Freud is the niggling feeling that the Triton problem might get worse. Then I'd be in for double bubble.

The Freud 3000 I saw demonstrated appeared to have as good above table bit changing as my small Triton. Although I've never had a problem with this on the Triton.

The above table height adjusment appeared to be far better than the Triton and had none of the jumpy issues of the Triton. Anyone yet tried putting the spring back in the adjuster ?
