Hi all,

I have a piece of ripple maple I want to use for something but at the angle it will be at the ripple is not too visible.

It's not too strong of a ripple in any direction but you can see it when at 90 degrees to the finished orientation.

Just wondering is there any way to bring out the ripple more? I have tried sanding it to 180 and applied a thin coat of boiled linseed oil. When wet it was barely visible, dry back to the same as unfinished.

It would be nice to be able to see it but not sure how?

Any advice appreciated

Thanks

I've previously had good results by applying a light stain to the wood then sanding it back. The colour will persist in some of the more porous parts but not the more dense bits of the pattern. A very, very dilute black or brown stain will be best for a natural colour. Practice on an offcut, start as light as possible and make stronger until you get it right.
