A stunning piece of work with great energy and zest.. It is refreshing to have people in turning who are prepared to rip up the template. I don't know Phil but would guess he has a professional art, design, and creative background to produce such work. Lets have more of you being prepared to rip up the template.

it certainly is a stunning piece of work , but i have to say soulfly that i'm a little confused. Your original opinion of phillips work was this

If you want to be an artist and all contemporary with a "fresh approach" etc then go and work in glass, ceramic, metal etc. You will find it nearly impossible to get anywhere in the art world working in wood.. Most galleries and the art establishment have a blind spot when it comes to wood. It's not "contemporary" they will say. Doing the simple things well in turning is often the hardest thing to do and it is what you have to do if you want to make any money at it. Most arty woodturning is cringe making rubbish, lets face it.

its great that you have finally seen the light ... what changed your mind ?

Showing great promise as with all your work Philip. Put me down for a photo of your set-up as well, very curious to see how you did it.

I've done a bit more to this one and nearly reached the final stage. Textured and stained. Thought it might be interesting to see how this develops.

More info please Phil. What methods of staining and texturing.

It looks brilliant, really impressed. Please also post a pic of the carving\toolpost setup.

Bootiful. What have you used to colour it Philip as that is lovely. The quality is outstanding, way beyond anything I will be doing for a long long time. The design is deceptively simple looking so doesn't appear fussy and yet it is very very effective.

Thanks for the feedback. The texture on the underside is pyrography. Spirit stained using black only on the underside. Top is olive green first, black cut back with meths then red then black again in parts. Stain is absorbed into wood and on surface, burnished with fingers.

Not ready yet to describe routing method, thought about ways of doing it for a couple of years then spent a considerable amount of time and money sorting it so I want to keep it to myself for a while.

Very nice Phillip =D> =D>

Shame about the paint/finish splatters inside the bowl (if that's what they are?) I think I would probably have left the outside smooth, the statement made by the rim is more than enough IMHO.

Excellent work all the same

Phil if you can improve on that it will be amazing. Everything is so crisp and clean. You are right to hold out until it is to your satisfaction,If you have spent years developing the system you are intitled to take your time and receieve the plaudits. A truly beaytiful piece of workmanship, ant wait to see what you are happy with. Thank you for sharing REgards Boysie

understood Phil. Look forward to the end result.

Superb.

I loved it when you posted about it first, and nothing's changed that view.

As Richard says, and way you could take out the spatter-spots from the dished area ? .... ( if indeed thats what they are ? ...

Its a fantastic piece of work Phillip..
worthy of the highest praise and admiration 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

This exercise is now more or less complete. It was experimental from beginning to end.

The centre texture is made from collaged bits and pieces supplemented with texture pastes. Texturing the paste with various implements then overpainting with acrylic gesso. It was then underpainted with acrylic artists paint followed by oil paint glazes.

It has provided me with the knowledge that the techniques applied can be used on future projects.

If there are any questions (apart from the routing set-up!) I'll answer them as best I can.

I think it's absolutely stunning Phil. I can't tell you what an inspiration this is. Not just the router carving, but the paint techniques too (probably more so).

Beautiful Phillip, Whats her name ?

Absolutely beautiful, Philip. I love the painted/textured centre. The colour & texture are glorious and contrast so well with the precise, routed black rim. You should be very proud of that piece.

Look forward to seeing much more of your work in the future.
