I have mooted this subject before and I apologise for any inconvenience or repetitiveness but................

I will seriously have to consider purchasing another chuck in the very near future.
I have many sets of jaws, faceplate rings etc. to fit my old chuck and to having to replace everything is going to be too costly and I must keep my production turning up and running.

Therefore I ask all of you and manufacturers, if the jaw mountings on your chucks have bolts at 13mm centres?

If there is such a chuck it is more likely to be purchased than one that does not match up to those dimensions!

Thanks to all for your patience, I will be posting this message on other forums to gain the greatest coverage.

Regards, Peter.

What was your old chuck? Replaceable - or it's up-to-date guise?

The Versachuck from The Toolpost is very versatile indeed at fitting all sorts of old jaws - I think I prefer the SuperNova or Patriot as a first choice - but the Versachuck might be just what you are after?

Unfortunately irreplaceable! The company that made it has ceased production, Selbix was the name. I have contacted them in the hope that they might have one left on the shelves but unfortunately not, but they did send me drawings and new bolts FOC, which I appreciate!

The Versachuck appeals very much but I would like to know before I commit myself to purchasing.

Regards Peter.

Peter it is not only the hole centres you need to consider but the safety register at the Jaw-Carrier interface, the different manufactures have different male/female configurations, presumably to maximise accessories sales for each brand. (Patriot is an exception deliberately being same pattern as Nova)

I would suggest contacting Peter Hemsley at The Tool Post as I believe he was responsible for the manufacturing of the Versa Chuck

The versa chuck is very good - its designed to take axminster jaws, sorby jaws , and erm another maker which i cant remember right now.

give peter at toolpost a bell ( 01235 511101)and i'm sure he'll be able to help (technically he is only responsible for the design - they are made in india to his specification)

that said its doubtful that your jaws will fit - unless they themselves were a copy of one of the three types mentioned - face plate rings will of course fit on any chuck of the same diameter

Peter can you scan the rear of one of your Jaws and post the picture? or mail it to me.

Hopefully the positioning and gender of the safety key will be accurate enough to allow comparison with other known makes.

As requested, just one of the jaw sections from the smallest set, nevertheless all the jaws are the same mounting.

Peter, having printed that as near scale as I can manage I have my doubts about your 13mm hole centres, I make the centres nearer 19mm - 3/4".

If you can I would suggest that if VersaChuck do not have a suitable carrier that you take a Jaw set along to someone who has an Axminster Professional chuck, it looks as though jaws would bolt onto its carrier.

BUT A WORD OF CAUTION:

The Safety recess in your Jaws is wider than the Axminster, if the inner edge of your Jaw groove does not sit firmly against the Axminster Jaw Carrier Tenon then you will have no centrifugal protection if the jaw fixing screws loosen. In compression mode you would be relying solely on the screws with no assistance from the tenon.

I have recently spoken to Peter and am sending him one of my jaws for comparison.

Hopefully the Versachuck can fill the bill!

if it fits on an axmister proffesional carrier it will fit on the versa chuck as thats one of its compatible types - conversely if it doesnt fit the versa chuck it probably wont fit the axminster either

The only caveat is in the warning, the Aximinster Carriers have a much slimmer tenon and won't provide the same support in all modes if using jaws to their maximum loading.

Another vote for Versa chuck here.

Mine was a tad more expensive than others I'd considered, but I was able to offset the delivery costs by collecting, as I frequently work nearby.
Downside of this is the temptations in the rest of the shop!!

Subsequently I've bought more jaws & now it starts to make good sense over other brands

Peter Hemsley is very good at helping and the product support he gives, post sales should not be underestimated.

Just thought you might appreciate knowing that I have just bought my replacement chuck.

I have ordered a Versachuck from The Toolpost plus some equivalent jaws to the O'Donnell.

Now waiting in trepidation for the delivery!

Regards, Peter.
