Removing excess filler

Hi - Unless you insert the filler very accurately into cracks and gaps, the knife is going to spread it over the surrounding area.
Afterwards, sanding spreads it further and probably drives it into the wood surface.
How can this excess be removed?

I don’t know what filler you are using or indeed what you are filling but as with a lot of things masking tape is your friend, mask the offending gap, apply the filler, peel away the tape & remove any excess filler with a scraper.
 
If possible, filler is best applied after the first finishing coat and then rubbed down (if using sanding sealer/varnish etc) that way the dust from the filler does not get caught in the grain.
