Newly aquired in February this year, Well made saw, Huge table and a decent stop you know wont move as it clamps both ends, Dust extraction a bit poor, Far too much dust building up in the base.

Friday, working away trying to complete a batch of drawers i notice a funny smell, i'm thinking its the guys in the unit next door grinding some metal with oil or paint on it as its gives a certain kinda smell, carried on working and i keep smelling this smell, I stand back and i see flames through one of the holes in the saw base, I quickly grab the extinguisher and put it out, I took off the side panel and see a molten cylinder shape object hanging down, Turns out it was the motor capacitor.

i'm so lucky the accumulated dust hadn't been dripped on and set alight, i'm now trying to get this resolved with Record Power.

Has anyone had any experience with their guarantee? I dent have the receipt to hand as their claims procedure needs this, Will have to see the bookkeeper for it if they dont respond well to my email that their defective saw nearly cost me my business!

anyone ever heard of this problem before?

Tony

I telephoned record recently the lock on the bandsaw fence was not very firm needed a small part and the upper back stop on the blade was not running true, i was sent a new compleat fence and a back stop, just asked for postal address no problems.
Capacitors fail in electrical equipment quite often usually in power supplies they can go with a bang sometimes they swell up first then fail.

Capacitor failure is a well known problem with chiwanese motors. However I had only heard of them failing not catching fire. Doing a bit of research it would suggest that it is more common than thought, in electric motors in a lot of differnet uses. Seems you were unlucky, but suspect you are not the first.

that reminds me when I was at tech, in a bored moment in the lab I decided to see what would happen if I connected an electolytic capacitor across the bench power supply the wrong way round. Nothing at all....for 2-3mins so forgot about it. Suddenly a big bang and the lab was full as if a feather pillow had been burst...very dissaproving look from the lecturer. I never did that a gain though.

This explains about harmonics in a motor can cause your problem bursting and fire.

Today i spoke to Record an they told me the saw was only for light use and not suitable for a small industrial workhop, They have given me a full refund and ive put it to a Startrite STA 300E which was alot more money but I intend on keeping it for a long time.
