I've been looking for a used Record 040, 043 or 044 for some time now, albeit at a price that won't break the bank, and come up dry as in the US there aren't many around. Ebay makes me nervous a bit, with the international shipping to this side of the pond. So my question is can anyone point me in the right direction for any folks who deal in used woodworking tools, as I would rather deal with someone in the business. I realize I might have to pay a bit more for this assurance. Also, are there any individuals who might have one with all the irons to sell? regards from New Jersey - RN

Admiral,

I have purchased tools from the Mother Country from both Tony Murland and Andrew Stephens. I have been quite pleased with both firms. If you do not see what you are looking for on their website(s), shoot them an email and they will be glad to check their stock.

Of course, the exchange rate is not much help these days but their prices are still reasonable.

I got a 044 from my local tool dealer a couple years ago. Complete except for the long rods and the depth stop, $60. He provided me later with Stanley 45 rods (they fit), and I made myself a depth stop. Works well.

In the US you might want to check with Pat Leach (www.supertool.com), but I believe his prices are on the high side (never bought from him personally). There are others, they just don't come to mind right now.

Paul K has purchased from the UK, he might chime in.

Aye, bought my 044 and some woodies from the UK. I spent quite some time getting a Record 044 for a reasonable price, and although I spent more in shipping then the actual cost getting it here, it was still cheaper then I could get it in the states without getting awfully lucky. I bought mine off eBay from a seller with good feedback and a history of selling woodworking tools.

There are a bunch of dealers in the UK; I'd expect some here could chime in.

My one experience with him eight years ago got me a run-of-the-mill 78 at top dollar.

I also buy from Tony and Andrew, both reliable vendors with large stocks.

Hi Admiral,
The air shipping to the US on a 044 gets a bit steep as packed they go over the 2KG small packet limit. I have sent a couple surface but it takes a while and quite a bit of finger nail biting at both ends until it arrives.
The 040 is not such a problem as it is light, I have one on at the moment (search mahking51).
They are quite rare in the states but fairly common here.
Best bet is to source one here and have it sent to the hotel of a friend who is over on vacation, I do that all the time, though you can find you have less and less friends..............

Hi,
Thought I'd jump in for a minute. I know you are right to have concern buying sight unseen, but in the past six months I have bought a mixture of five 043's and 044's for between £9 and £15. Of course I check the sellers track record before purchasing but the tools I have bought have all been in excellent condition and well described.

I also like the new Veritas plow plane (shown) which I have tested out and love it. But I'm not sure of the cost over there.

Re the 043 and 044. These two planes are wonderful and compact and do the job of plowing better than many of the fancier ones with all the dozens of cutters. Most often all I really need is a plow plane. I recently had to restore some stiles to a pair of box sash windows and used the 043 to plow the groove for the parting stops. It worked great and all the mess was right there like a ball of string leaving me with no clean up. I think it was much faster than setting up a router too, and much less messy. I also get to use the balls of stringy shavings as fire starters in the winter.

I have always had success buying from the UK when I am in the US and also here in the UK when buying at home. I know that that is not always the case. Not sure what shipping is to the US but I hope you get one of these great planes before they disappear from the market.
